S2S takes a team of veterans to band Saw Whet Owls in West Virginia

S2S Executive Director Michael Cohn took a team of veterans, science partners, and conservation experts to a Saw Whet Owl Banding station in West Virginia in November. Local ornithologists under the direction of Ben Spory taught the S2S team more about how the owls are monitored and cared for at their local banding station in Bergton, West Virginia. The team got up close and personnel with these beautiful creatures, and they learned more about how the scientists determine the health, age, and wellness of these owls.

A Saw Whet Owl!

S2S Invited a number of veterans from its contingent, and they thoroughly enjoyed catching up and learning more about these creatures. This banding station is open throughout November to gather critical data about the health of the local owls, and this is the second year S2S has returned to visit Ben and his team. It remains one of S2S’s favorite projects, and Mike and the team had an amazing time sharing conservation stories and bonding as a group.
