S2S participates in bird banding with the team from JFK Memorial Bird Sanctuary on Long Island!

S2S was back at it these past few weekends banding smaller birds like passerines, wrens and warblers with the crew at JFK Memorial Bird Sanctuary on Long Island. We also introduced our partner Abby Kimmet, Ornithologist and Professor at Hofstra University on Long Island. Abby’s expertise focused on grassland birds, and S2S has been helping her enmesh in the local birding community and find the best locations to continue her research for next spring. Pictured here is a saltmarsh sparrow, northern parula, yellow warbler, Black throated blue warbler, common yellowthroat, northern waterthrush mourning warbler, black and white warbler, and blackpoll warbler. All birds were handled and banded under USGS Permit.

S2S Executive Director Michael Cohn continues to gain more and more experience by banding with our permitted partners in New York and Virginia. If you would like to learn more about these activities, please contact us at soldiers2scientists@gmail.com!
