S2S collaborates with The Nature Conservancy at Blowing Rocks Preserve in Jupiter, Florida!
As part of a new program beginning in Florida, Soldiers2Scientists has started a new relationship with The Nature Conservancy, a world renowned conservation organization dedicated to protecting natural landscapes and creatures throughout the United States. Blowing Rocks Preserve is located on Jupiter Island in Hobe Sound just north of West Palm Beach. S2S invited some local friends to come and learn more about the critical conservation efforts on this beautiful island. Volunteers were toured around the grounds and participated in a seine netting activity.

While Soldiers2Scientists works around the country, it is our long term goal to coordinate volunteers in Florida and engage the veteran community to try out citizen science. There are currently opportunities just outside of Tampa in Sebring and now in Jupiter! In the winter months, S2S plans to coordinate a larger event at Blowing Rocks and get as many volunteers and veterans out as possible! Stay Tuned for an Event Post on our Social Media Channels! S2S has made a number of attempts to secure grants in Florida, and as a result, we have an extensive network in this state. We hope to coordinate with The Nature Conservancy at Blowing Rocks for a large event in the winter months when the weather is better. This is very important as much of the veteran community are senior citizens. During the recent drought, the weather has been too hot and very dangerous, so it is our hope the winter will provide appropriate weather for a large scale catered event with at least 30 volunteers!

If you live in the Jupiter Area (just north of West Palm Beach) or near Tampa, and you are interested in learning more about local science and exploration activities, please don’t hesitate to contact The Nature Conservancy’s Outreach and Volunteer Specialist, Kate Tillery, at kate.brown@tnc.org. You can also contact S2S’ Executive Director, Michael Cohn, at soldiers2scientists@gmail.com, and we can find something in your local area, wherever you are in the US!
A great catch!
This was our first event here on the East Coast of Florida! Shoutouts to all the Florida veteran service men and women, and hopefully we can plan a substantial event for everyone this winter! Soldiers2Scientists out!
